Lughnasadh: Honoring the First Harvest and Embracing the Cycle of Abundance

By Shane Hudgins

As the golden fields sway and the summer sun begins to soften, we arrive at Lughnasadh (pronounced LOO-nah-sah), also known as Lammas - the first of the three harvest festivals in the Wheel of the Year. Celebrated around August 1st, Lughnasadh is a time to honor the fruits of the Earth, the rewards of our labor, and the divine dance between light and dark as we prepare for the shift into autumn.

More than just a seasonal marker, Lughnasadh is a spiritual celebration of abundance, gratitude, and transformation.

The Spiritual Meaning of Lughnasadh

Lughnasadh originates from Celtic traditions and is named after the god Lugh, a solar deity associated with skill, craftsmanship, and leadership. The festival commemorates the gathering of the first grains, particularly wheat and barley, which were historically ground into flour and baked into ceremonial loaves.

Spiritually, Lughnasadh reminds us:

  • To harvest what we’ve sown - both physically and metaphorically
  • To express gratitude for abundance and sustenance
  • That sacrifice and release are necessary for continued growth
  • To prepare for the inward journey of autumn and winter

How to Celebrate Lughnasadh

Lughnasadh is a time to pause, reflect, and give thanks. Here are ways to honor the sacred energy of this sabbat:

1. Create a Harvest Altar

Adorn your altar with grains, corn husks, sunflowers, apples, and symbols of the sun. Add crystals like citrine, garnet, and amber to call in solar energy and prosperity.

2. Bake Bread or Harvest Foods

Baking is one of the most traditional Lughnasadh rituals. As you knead the dough, infuse it with intentions of gratitude and blessings. Share with friends or offer a portion to the Earth.

3. Reflect on Your Inner Harvest

Ask yourself:

  • What have I manifested this year?
  • What am I grateful for?
  • What is ready to be released so that new growth can emerge?

Journaling or a simple gratitude meditation can bring these reflections to life.

4. Rituals for Abundance & Release

Burn a bay leaf with something you’re ready to release. Offer it to a fire with gratitude. Then, light a gold or orange candle and visualize abundance flowing into your life.

Crystals and Herbs for Lughnasadh

  • Crystals: Citrine (abundance), Sunstone (joy), Garnet (grounded vitality)
  • Herbs: Rosemary (clarity), Basil (prosperity), Chamomile (blessings)

Craft charm bags or herbal bundles as offerings or to carry the energy of the season with you.

Honoring the Turning of the Wheel

Lughnasadh is also a time of spiritual recalibration. As the days begin to shorten, the energy subtly shifts inward. The Earth whispers: prepare, reflect, savor.

Marking the sabbats through intentional ritual and reflection deepens your connection with the cycles of nature and the sacred rhythms of your own soul.

Final Thoughts: Gratitude is the Gateway

Whether you're harvesting literal crops or symbolic successes, Lughnasadh reminds us that gratitude and intention transform the ordinary into the sacred. In honoring what has grown, we become conscious co-creators of our spiritual and earthly lives.
